Our Story
Miami is a unique city, full of vibrant cultures, ethnic diversity and lots of challenges and opportunities. However, many young girls growing up in Miami, also face significant adversity that, without intervention, guidance and support, could result in anti-social behavior, learning struggles and problems with physical and mental health. Strong Girls, Inc. was developed to provide girls a safe, consistent, nurturing space to help them understand and manage adversity, develop strengths, set realistic goals, build healthy relationships and manage conflict productively. Trained facilitators lead each of our programs using an evidence-based, trauma-informed Social and Emotional Learning curriculum to help girls develop critical skills in 5 key competencies: Social-Awareness, Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision-Making and Relationship Skills. Intentions are set at each meeting following 10 minutes of guided mindfulness that we call our "reset button" to clear the mind for positive learning. Each program is delivered through a unique lens that caters to the needs and interests of the girls. For example, at one of our programs, our girls develop and practice SEL skills by cultivating and managing our edible garden while girls at another program practice those skills through volleyball. We partner with schools in Miami-Dade beginning in 3rd grade and continuing through high school to help eliminate the obstacles to academic learning and positive adult outcomes. We view academic proficiency and positive social emotional development as crucial precursors to self-sufficiency. We envision our girls graduating from high school with the capacity, determination and skills to lead healthy, productive lives.
